Interview on GIs with Dr. Takahashi

Dr. Suginaka, a director at The Ministry of Agriculture in Japan told a press conference today, explaining the agreements made with the European Commission in the JAEPA negotiations.

He said "Parmesan Cheese" can be used for names of cheeses in Japan even they don't come from Parma, Italy, although "Gorgonzola Cheese" can be used only by certain producers from a certain area in Italy.

He stressed "Parmesan Cheese" brands available in the Japanese market have been mostly from other countries like US. The consumers in this country are familiar with US Parmesan Cheese and recognize as a different brand from the original "Parmigiano Reggiano" cheese in Italy.
